Thoughts in our mind may seem harmless. What is the harm in it if you just say it in your mind? Our thoughts hold a lot of power. There is no such thing as it just being in our mind. What we hold in our head impacts our lives in a big way. There are ways to use the power of our thoughts to guide our life to what we want. Left unattended who knows where you will end up. (hint: a lot of what has happened in the past) To not use the power of your thoughts you are not utilizing one of the most powerful tools available to you.

Here are some ways to harness the power of your thoughts:

1. Think From the Future not the Past

When you keep repeating thoughts from your past you will keep seeing the same results that you have. Thoughts like I’m a procrastinator is a limiting belief. Key word is belief – an acceptance that something is true. Not that it is true and can never be changed. Being a procrastinator may have been true in your past but it doesn’t have to be true going forward. You can absolutely change the fact that you are a procrastinator. It is not written in stone that for the rest of your life you will be a procrastinator. You could be the person that has their Christmas shopping done in October. You could send in documents that are due a week before the deadline. The student that didn’t start a paper the night before does not have to come with you into the future. It all starts with your thoughts. What do you want to be in the future? Don’t focus on what has been, focus on what could be. The options are limitless. I would encourage something that is helpful but it is your life and you can choose anything.

2. Thought responsibility

There are a couple of areas where we can harness the power of the thoughts by taking responsibility. These come in the form of unconscious thoughts and when we say someone or something made me feel/think/be that way. Unconscious thoughts are not thoughts that we can’t control. They are more like thoughts that happen because we have them programmed pretty deep in our minds. They feel automatic and as if you don’t have any control over them. This is the first place you can take responsibility of your thoughts. Because these thoughts are so ingrained it will take time. First you have to become aware of them and accept that you are responsible for them. Then you have to figure out why they are there. At that point you can choose if you are going to keep them or if you are going to think something different. How many times have you said that you are some way because of how or where you grew up? Chances are it has happened numerous times. Our childhood certainly shapes us as a person. It’s a time where our brains learn their default ways. The issue is that you say it as a fact. That you can’t change it you just are that way. The truth is you have the power to change that. It is like the unconscious thoughts. It is in there deep and seems as if it’s impossible to change. It is 100% possible to change it.

3. understand the impact

Thoughts, beliefs, opinion, theories, notions and anything else that you use to describe what happens in your head decide how you feel, act, and the results that you get.

It all starts with the brain.

An example of this would be saying I am not a morning person I can’t get up at 5am.

That thought will not create a feeling making you want to get out of bed and up at 5am. Then your not going to get up at 5am and sleeping. And now your result is that you have missed what you were supposed to do at 5am.

Contract that to I haven’t been able to wake up at 5am before but it is possible. You are allowing yourself to be open to it. You will create an emotion that will allow you to get up at 5am and you will be able to do what you need to do.

You can have anything you want in your life just by learning how to harness its power.
